If you live in the Eagle Heights Apartments community or frequent Frautschi Point, you may have noticed some earth moving and clearing at the Madison Water Utility Well 19 site. Well 19 is located on an easement on UW-Madison property on Lake Mendota Drive. It pumps approximately 500,000,000 gallons of water a year to the University, including the UW Hospital complex and surrounding near west side neighborhoods. Recent testing showed three naturally occurring contaminants (iron, manganese, and radium) in the well’s water that require mitigation. Construction began this spring to upgrade pumps and electronic controls at the facility and add a new filtration system. This will require additional structures at the site and a realignment of the driveway. According to the Water Utility website, construction will last through 2025.
Madison Water Utility and its consultants developed a landscape plan for the updated facility with input from the Lakeshore Nature Preserve and UW Landscape Architects. The plan focuses on screening the facility with native plants.
Please visit the Madison Water Utility website for more information about the project. To view the landscape plan, see the linked presentation under Past Meetings/Additional Information, October 2022 – Public Information Meeting 2.
