East of Eagle Heights Apartments across tree-lined Lake Mendota Drive is one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating community gardens.
The Eagle Heights Community Gardens was established in 1962 to offer students and others the opportunity to have an organic garden. UW-Madison students (many from all around the world because Eagle Heights has so many international residents) work alongside Madison community members on approximately 450 organic garden plots.
With as many as 60 different languages spoken by gardeners using horticultural techniques from across the planet, growing flowers and vegetables here is a rich cross-cultural learning experience.
