It was with deep sadness that Preserve staff learned of the passing of W. Jerome (Jerry) Frautschi last month. Jerry was more than a supporter of the UW–Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve—he was a visionary whose generosity and dedication have forever shaped this cherished space.
Jerry’s commitment to preserving campus natural spaces began in the late 1980s, when he and his brother John donated Frautschi Point to UW–Madison. The family subsequently established a generous endowment to ensure its long-term care. Most recently, his extraordinary gift of nearly $17 million to build the Frautschi Center at the entrance to Picnic Point will create a lasting legacy—a sustainable and accessible gathering space where UW students, faculty, staff, and the broader Madison community can connect with the remarkable cultural, ecological, and wellness resources of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve.

Jerry’s commitment to UW-Madison, our beautiful lakeshore, and the Madison community will enrich lives for generations to come. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
