Stewardship donors to the Lakeshore Nature Preserve

Stewardship gifts have benefited the Lakeshore Nature Preserve.

Class of 1918 MarshClass gifts

It is a longstanding tradition among UW-Madison alumni to mark major reunions of their graduating class (especially the 50th reunion) by giving extraordinarily generous gifts to their alma mater to express their gratitude for the role it has played in their lives. The Lakeshore Nature Preserve has benefited enormously from such generosity. Indeed, we couldn't do much of the work we do without class gifts of this kind.

Gifts of Land

Many people don't realize it today, but the university did not always own the lands that now lie within the boundaries of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve. Even Picnic Point, which seems such an indispensable part of the UW-Madison landscape, has been part of the campus for not much more than half a century.? Although different tracts of land came to the university in different ways, some of the most critical ones were the result of extremely generous gifts by far-sighted donors.

People who have made a difference

Hundreds of individuals have contributed to the Lakeshore Nature Preserve over the years, giving their labor, their money, their advocacy, and most of all their love to this wonderful place. Although we can't describe all of them on this website, we'd like to share a few stories of people who have truly made a difference to the Preserve through remarkable acts of generosity. We hope you'll find their stories as inspiring as we do.

Please check back to read more about Special Donors (appearing here soon).
