Commemorative Benches

Benches placed throughout the Preserve provide a place for our visitors to stop and enjoy a view or rest along a wooded path. The Commemorative Benches Plan describes how and where benches will be added to the Preserve.  Donors wishing to dedicate a bench in the Preserve should contact the Preserve's development director at the UW Foundation.

Research and Teaching in the Preserve

Research and Teaching Permit Application

student researchers in the Class of 1918 Marsh

The Lakeshore Nature Preserve offers a rich environment for research activities—and is conveniently located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The Lakeshore Nature Preserve Committee has policies and guidelines for the stewardship of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve in conjunction with the UW-Madison’s educational mission.

The Preserve Committee welcomes teaching and research projects in the Preserve but requires that they be approved by the Lakeshore Nature Preserve Field Manager. The Field Manager maintains a database of registered projects in order to document the use of the Preserve, share information with all who are interested, and help avoid conflicts.

For any questions about these policies or the permit process, please contact the Lakeshore Nature Preserve Field Manager.

Bicyling in the Preserve

Current bike policy

Picnic Point is a quieter, calmer, more natural space than the city surrounding it. If bicycles are to continue using it, they must ride responsibly:

  • respect a slower pace
  • ride single file
  • announce your approach from behind
  • yield to pedestrians
  • ride only on the main trail
  • consider locking your bike at the entrance

Bikers and walkers can coexist on Picnic Point.  Please help!
